Business idea

Deform is specialised in hot and cold forming of all types of steel plates for different applications by utilising our heavy press capacity. Our ambition is also to be at least as good and successful as our competitors within the services cutting, welding and heavy plate working.

Our total capacity, together with the high competence of our employees, will satisfy the total requirements of the market. Deform is the obvious choice when it comes to constructions within the range of our resources. Our unique resources in press forming are what make us special and the prime reason why customers choose Deform as their supplier.

Our history

Sheet-metal prefabrication started in 1907 at the Strömsnäs Ironworks. Today we are using the same premises, which means that we have many year's of competence built into the walls. Investments were made in hydraulic presses and roller-bending machines up until 1940, to be able to form the plates produced in the ironworks into heads and shells for steam boilers and other pressure vessels, etc. The parts were initially riveted together before welding techniques were introduced.

The operations expanded in 1940 and moved into new premises with welding, sheet-metal working, and other metal forming and machining, employing about 230 people in these operations. Of these, 184 worked in the premises where we today are just more than 30 people working. In 1939 the ownership changed hands and passed to Degerfors Järnverks AB, which was a fully owned subsidiary of Uddeholm AB.

In the middle of the 1960's our operations reached a peak with a total of 320 workers and 80 staff. In 1969 the company was split up and Uddcomb was formed, which moved to Karlskrona in 1972. In this same year the steel operations of Nyby and Uddeholm were merged into one company Nyby/Uddeholm AB.

When Avesta AB bought the steel part of Nyby/Uddeholm in 1984, there were 117 people employed in the operations at Degerfors. This number was reduced drastically to 63 people in connection with a merger of the prefabrication at Avesta and Degerfors, when a new company Nordform AB was started with operations at these two places.

As Avesta AB only wanted to work with stainless steel, it was decided in 1986 to move the stainless operations to Avesta, which meant that Nordform AB was closed down. Two of the employees, Benny Hammarström and Benny Westergren, at the Degerfors unit were given the opportunity to start Deform, which was thus formally established on the 18 May 1987.

The recession hit hard at Deform, resulting in unsatisfactory profitability, which lead to that Karlskoga Invest took over 67% of the shares in the company in the autumn of 1991. As well as the infusion of capital, this gave the company a more stable platform on which to continue building. A financially strong parent company also gave possibilities that we have lacked earlier.

Karlskoga Invest took over the remainder of the shares in May 1996 and Deform became a 100% owned subsidiary company. (The company mentioned in the text above, Karlskoga Invest, is today called Thermia AB.)
